Shandong University is one of the earliest universities in Chinainitiating the research in Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics. Back in the 1930s, Dr. Pu WANG was the first faculty hired by Shandong University. He later became a PhD student of the famous nuclear physicist, Professor Lise Meitner, at Berlin University inGermany. In 1958, a summer school on Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics Theory was hosted by Shandong University in Qingdao and it became an important milestone in the history of Chinese Particle Physics. In 1950s, Department of Physics II was established, which was dedicated to conduct research in Nuclear Physics. In 1978, we joined an international cooperation project on Cosmic Experiment inTibet. In 1982, we joined a few high energy experiments at FNAL as an independent group. In 1981,Shandong University was the first higher education institution which was approved to enroll PhD student on High Energy Physics inChinaand the first PhD student graduated in 1984. In 2007, the discipline of Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics was approved as the National Key Discipline. In 2013, the Key Laboratory of Particle Physics and Particle Irradiation, Ministry of Education was established at Shandong University.
Currently, there are 36 full-time faculties, including 21 professors, 4 associate professors, 7 lecturers and 4 engineers in the institute. Research areas include Experimental Particle Physics, Theoretical Particle Physics and Low-Energy Accelerator Application Physics. As international collaboration being a feature in Particle Physics, we are involved in many international experiments, including ATLAS at LHC, STAR at RICH, BES-III at BEPC-II, LHAASO, Daya Bay and JUNO neutrino experiments, the PandaX dark matter experiment and so on.
