Milestones in history

  • June 1930, foundation of Department of Physics of National Qingdao University.

  • September 1932, renamed National Qingdao University as National Shandong University and Department of Physics and Department of Mathematics are merged into Department of Mathematics and Physics.

  • March 1933, separated from Department of Mathematics.

  • June 1935, received funds from the Education and Culture Foundation of China.

  • March 1936, divided into two groups of Physics and Astrometeorology.

  • June 1938, suspended with Shandong University.

  • March 1946, rehabilitated as one of 15 departments after National Shandong University’s rehabilitation.

  • May 1953, physics was ranked as one of eight key disciplines of Shandong University.

  • March 1957, foundation of the Party Committee of Department of Physics.

  • July 1958, hosted lectures of fundamental particle and nuclear physics theory.

  • October 1958, relocated to Jinan City from Qingdao City together with Shandong University.

  • August 1960, foundation of Department of Atomic Energy (also called the 2nd Department of Physics) based on atomic energy group of Department of Physics and foundation of Department of Electronics based on electronics group.

  • November 1961, foundation of the Laboratory of Magnetics, which under direct supervision of Ministry of Education.

  • March 1962, Magnetics was ranked as one of seven key disciplines of Shandong University.

  • September 1970, Optics separated from Department of Physics and became Department of Optics of Shandong University.

  • May 1976, successfully designed and produced Germanium Tunnel Diode.

  • November 1981, High Energy Physics and Magnetics were authorized to offer PhD degree, while High Energy Physics, Magnetics and Solid Physics were authorized to offer Master degree by the State Council.

  • May 1984, Germanium Tunnel Diode designed by Department of Physics was used by the communication satellite.

  • June 1984, the first student received High Energy Physics PhD degree in China graduated from Shandong University.

  • July 1986, Solid Physics was authorized to offer PhD degree, while Semiconductor and Device Physics were authorized to offer Master degree by The State Council.

  • June 1987, Solid Physics, Magnetics and High Energy Physics were ranked as the Key Disciplines of Shandong University.

  • July 1989, Photoelectric Materials and Devices separated from Department of Physics and became the Institute of Photoelectric Materials and Devices in Shandong University.

  • 1990, School of Physics was authorized by the State Education Commission to be a Post-doctoral Station.

  • 1992, Condensed Matter Physics was ranked as the National Key Discipline.

  • 1993, Particle and Nuclear Physics was ranked as the Shandong Provincial Key Discipline.

  • 1993, both laboratories of low-dimension Material Physics and High Energy Physics were ranked as the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratories.

  • 1994, Physics was authorized to be the National Basic Scientific Research and Faculty Training Base

  • 1997, Microelectronics was authorized to enroll undergraduate.

  • 1998, Physics was ranked as the Key Discipline supported by the "National 211 Project".

  • 1999, Physics as the 1st class disciplines was authorized to offer PhD degree.

  • 1999, Microelectronics and Solid Electronics were authorized to offer PhD degree.

  • 1999, Material Physics and Chemistry were authorized to offer PhD degree.

  • 2000, Laboratory of low-dimension Material Physics and State Key Laboratory of Crystal Material mergered together.

  • 2000, School of Physics and Microelectronics was established through merging of the original Department of Physics, Institute of Photoelectric Materials and Devices, the original Departments of Physics from both Shandong Engineering University and Shandong Medical University.

  • 2001, Condensed Matter Physics was ranked as the Key subject by the "National 985 Projects".

  • 2002, Particle and Nuclear Physics was ranked as the Key Discipline by the "National 211 -II Project".

  • September 2004, passed national assessment for National Basic Scientific Research and Faculty Training Base.

  • January 2006, the program of "Applied Basic Research on the Interaction of Particles and Photoelectric Materials" received second class National Prize for Natural Science of 2005.

  • January 2006, the 1st Faculty Representatives Meeting was held.

  • July 2007, Center of Experimental Physics Teaching was approved as the Shandong Provincial Demonstration Center of Experimental Physics Teaching.

  • September 2007, passed assessment of the National Key Discipline of Condensed Matter Physics.

  • September 2007, Particle and Nuclear Physics was approved as the National Key Discipline.

  • January 2008, renamed as School of Physics.

  • August 2008, Center of Experimental Physics Teaching was approved as the National Demonstration Center of Experimental Physics Teaching.

  • September 2008, hosted the 2008 Fall Meeting of Chinese Physics Society.

  • August 2009, Applied Physics was ranked as Shandong Provincial Brand Displine and Microelectronics as Shandong Provincial Special Displine.

  • May 2010, moved to the New Physics Building in Central Campus of Shandong University.

  • August 2010, inauguration of the Shandong University-Virginia Tech International Joint Laboratory for Bionomical Physics.

  • December 2010, Key Laboratory of Particle Physics and Particle Irradiation was approved by Ministry of Education.

  • May 2012, Nobel Laureate Peter Grunberg joined School of Physics.

  • January 2013, Physics is ranked 9th place among domestic universities according to the assessments from Ministry of Education, Chinain 2012.

  • April 2016, School of Microelectronics was formed and separated from School of Physics.
